Auto-Immune Diseases

What are Autoimmune Diseases?

Autoimmune Diseases are conditions in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, tissues, or organs. Normally, the immune system defends the body against infections and foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses.

There are over 80 types of autoimmune diseases.  Some common types of autoimmune diseases include:

Rheumatoid arthritis (attacks joints)

Type 1 diabetes (attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas)

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (can affect multiple organs)

Multiple sclerosis (attack the myelin sheath around nerve cells)

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (attacks the thyroid gland)

Celiac disease (triggered by gluten, attacks the small intestine)

Symptoms of autoimmune diseases may include:

Fatigue: Often described as a persistent, overwhelming tiredness that isn’t relieved by rest.

Joint Pain and Swelling: Many autoimmune diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis, affect the joints, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Skin Issues: Rashes, hives, or skin discoloration can occur. For example, a butterfly-shaped facial rash is characteristic of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Inflammation: General inflammation can lead to redness, heat, pain, and swelling in various parts of the body.

Digestive Problems: Conditions like celiac disease or inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis might cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, or constipation.

Muscle Pain: Myalgia or muscle aches can be significant in some autoimmune diseases.

Fever: Low-grade fevers might occur, especially during flares of the disease.

Hair Loss: Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition that leads to hair loss, but hair loss can also be a symptom in other autoimmune diseases.

Nervous System Symptoms: This can include numbness, tingling, or weakness due to conditions like multiple sclerosis or Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Swollen Glands: Lymph nodes might become enlarged due to the immune response.

Dry Eyes and Mouth: Sjogren’s syndrome specifically targets the glands that produce tears and saliva.
